Rabbi Shira Lander, PhD was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in Ancient Judaism and Christianity, and earned a BA in Math and Philosophy at Yale. She served as a campus rabbi at JHU from 1992-96 and on Hopkins Hillel’s board of directors from 2007-2009. Rabbi Shira has held teaching positions at numerous universities, including Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Rice, and Southern Methodist University, where she founded and directed its Jewish Studies program and led two study trips to Israel. Throughout her career, her outstanding teaching has earned awards and fellowships. She has published and/or edited two books and over 25 articles in academic journals, scripture commentaries, and anthologies, and was a featured violinist in two recording albums of Jewish music. She spends her free time cooking, playing with her grandkids, singing, and making jewelry.
